Hey C1 5.0! Where’d my RGB Values Go?

Filed under: Technical — Eric Zepeda @ 8:41 am

Notice anything funny about the viewer up above? Yup that’s right, no RGB values. After a 14hr shoot last night, I get back to the office to find that somehow I zapped my RGB’s, and after uninstalling/reinstalling a few times finally came across this:

View–>Proof Profile–>No profile=No RGB’s displayed. Which now makes total sense in a Danish/Euro way. Solution is twofold:

1) Select a Proof Profile, “Selected Recipe” is a good choice, unless you have a specific need for something else like a press profile.

2) Save yourself a bunch of bleary-eyed frustration and check out the Phase One User Forum, which has shown signs of life lately, and where you’ll find exactly such a solution offered up by Jon Gilbert. Should have been my first stop actually.

Lastly, HEY PHASE!!!

How about a red warning along the lines of “No Proof Profile Selected ” right where the RGB values would be?

Pretty Please?

(Oh Yeah–Check out the Focus Mask tool btw, saves a lot of time.)

CSWx2: Hassy HTS and X-Rite ColorChecker Passport

Ok, am on set with some new toys and wanted to pass on a few thoughts, mainly about how much fun new gadgets can be.

First off, X-Rite’s Passport is a hit with me, not so much for the 99.00 price tag as much as I love the case. Yes that’s right, no more greasy assistant hands on my color cards and you can place it all over a still set without having to prop it up with something. The grey patch is big enough to use with a real live model, but I still would prefer a three stripe version over the single patch. There’s much more to this unit in the way of camera calibration via DNG, but I’ve not had a chance to get that far yet.

The other cool tool is the Hassy HTS, which is a tilt-shift adapter for the H series camera. The 1.5x multiplication factor is a bit steep, but having a mini viewcam to correct/throw focus is just way too much fun. You can shift up to 15 degrees and 10 degrees tilt. The adapter is a solid piece of gear and I love how it rotates to allow different angles of focal plane as well. At around $5400.00, it ain’t cheap, but I’m digging the versatility it brings to the set.

Phase One Releases Capture One 5 Pro, $399USD

Filed under: News, Opinion — Eric Isaac @ 10:20 am

I emphasize the price in the title because for most of us, we are going to have to pay this. We started with the 3.x software, shoving out $500 USD for it, then they announced 4.x and we patiently waited for about 2 years for them to actually release it and when they did, it didn’t work so well. Again we were patient for at least stability, never mind that they fixed what wasn’t broken, probably to appeal to Adobe Lightroom and Aperture users, but it never quite hit the mark. In fact, a lot of us moved on to those programs that they were trying to steer us away from. And today they say, “Sorry that 4.0 was never up to snuff, maybe we can do it with 5.0 but you’ll have to pay for this one.

I was very polite about all the 4.0 releases, biting my lip, but the 5.0 release, I’m going to have to have to draw blood. No way am I going to pay for the Pro version of this. I’ve already worked out a nice little workflow with Lightroom and it has a million benefits that Capture One will probably never have. Of course, I’ll be testing it out and learning it as part of my tech responsiblities

more info here. Of course everyone is scrambling to download it so the website is very slow today.

New Imac

Filed under: News — Rick Allen @ 6:04 pm

Ok so its not exactly news, hard not to know about any new product that Apple releases. But iFixIt has posted a detailed teardown that shows that the glossy glass panel is relatively easy to remove, you thinking what I’m thinking? Surely someone has to be working on a matte replacement!!!!! The imac also has a SATA optical drive, Anyone thinking of replacing that with a SSD drive and a MaxConnect Starts to sound pretty mean.

Overlay Application

Filed under: Cool Stuff of the Week — @ 1:03 am

I was trying to figure out tonight if Lightroom 2 has an overlay utility for overlaying other jpegs/pdfs/layouts. I didn’t happen to see one. Is it hiding somewhere that I’m not looking? Anyhow, after not finding one within the Lightroom software, I found this little app through a google search, and it’s so simple yet awesome that I had to post it. You launch the application, choose a file, then you can change the opacity, scale it to whatever size, move it around, and now you can overlay anything onto any window you’re running on a mac. Very awesome. Granted, most capture softwares have a built in overlay tool, but this is a very useful workaround to keep in your toolbox. It’s also a nice alternative if the overlay utility that your software has happens to suck.

Check it out and enjoy!

hey all,

which of your  opinion is the best laptop tripod mount availible at this point?  Not enclosed, like the seal like cases, just straight to the laptop.  thx
