
Just thought I’d pass this on. While there’s nothing earth-shattering about this kind of info for us (since, as techs it’s our job to know this stuff), there is plenty of stuff that make it a worthwhile read. There’s been an explosion of mfr. blogs and one does find useful nuggets of info here and there, so check it out next time the makeup artist and stylist are having a tizzy about where to put the Saran-Wrap and you’ve got a few minutes to burn.
Last week we reported that Leaf was bought out by Phase One, which left a lot of Leaf owners concerned about the future of Leaf products. Now it has been confirmed that Franke & Heidecke, the company that produces the Rolleiflex camera body for Leaf Afi as well as Rollei Products (such as the X-Act 2), has closed its doors. With this also came a report of the production of Leaf AFi Systems being halted for the time being. No news as to whether they will continue this system. Although its somewhat awkward and bulky design, many people in the industry has favored this system, with its superior lens system and full digital conformability. This news also effects Sinar which also has a system built on this design – The Hy6.

It seems that Phase and Leica have split due to irreconcilable differences. In October 2008, at Photokina, the two had announced a partnership with the MF S2 line. Leica still plans to develop the system, but without phase.

In related “news” it was reported that there is a rumor floating around that Canon is working Leica on the M-series cameras. Nothing is confirmed but the probablity is much higher now with the news of the Phase/Leica split
