Hey Guys
Here’s an app that uninstalls CaptureOne 4.x so that when installing a new version its all fresh and nice. Four items are deleted as recommended by phaseone before updating the app. these are
~/Library/Preferences/com.phaseone.captureone.plist ,
~/Pictures/Capture One Library/Capture One.col45 ,
~/Library/Application Support/Capture One , and
Applications/Capture One.app.
WARNING: This app is provided free and without warranty. And as it works you may find that it does in fact delete your copy of CaptureOne

If ya’ll haven’t read it, there is a great article on how retouching is getting out of control. Glad NY Times stepped up to the plate on this one. More here
The mentioned that there are sites dedicated to uncovering the bad retouching mistakes but skipped over referencing that site so I’ll just point it out now. Photoshop disasters!

Hey all, this latest update seems more stable when using the rotate tool. I was getting a spectacular “out of memory error”, but haven’t succeeded in replicating it as of yet with this update. Other than that, there’s improvements to P65+ and P40+ long exposures, but nothing too earth shattering. My minor peeve of not showing icons+text in the toolbars is still not fixed, but Phase at least mentions this in the release note that accompanies 4.8.1.
I have been using 4.8 more for my still life shoots and Winnie got to test it with the 5DMKII last week, where it seemed to work fine with the 10.5.7 update (one caveat is that WB for 5dMkII tethered is not supported yet?!?!?). I’m still using 3.7.9 for my high volume shoots where I can’t afford any downtime, but the writing is on the wall for v3.7. As new cameras and backs come online, the support will be in the form of v4, so getting familiar with the interface is highly recommended as it is only a matter of time…
Capture One v4.8.1
(I still love you 3.7.9!)
Hey all – I was curious if people are finding v4.8 to be substantially more stable than 4.7/4.6/etc.? I’ve been doing some off-set testing with a P25/H2 and 5D “classic” – and it seems to be crashing less. I’m particularly interested if anyone’s been putting 4.8 through the paces with a MKIII 1ds or 5D MKII – as 3.7.9 isn’t a tethering option with those cameras. But I’m curious about all camera/DB experiences. Let the harping begin!

Just wanted to pass this on to all you MFDB techs. Have you ever used a rocket blower on a DB only to see more dust shoot right back onto the sensor glass from the rocket blower? Annoying to me, and now I’ve found this super cool one from KOH Global Products that actually has a HEPA air filter and check valves. The check valves only allow air to go in one direction so all you ever get is pure filtered air. At 24.95 from B&H, that’s a deal…
Update: BH is out of stock, but Adorama has them here
Hey you guys,
What photo cataloging software do you guys like? I’m thinking about getting Portfolio Extensis. I need something for a database of 300 gigs+ and powerful search tools.
thanks!

Ok, we all know that this isn’t the first external solution for the MBP, with Quickertek and BatteryGeek, but the folks at TUAW have pointed out this addition to external battery world, and the price is pretty good. They also reference MikeGyver.com who builds a range of custom solutions for the MBP, along with a reference to a diy mod on the adapter that allows use with batts such as the iGo.
Couple of things here: 1) If you are handy with a soldering iron and have a basic knowledge of electronics, you could mod your own MBP/MagSafe cable for about 5 bucks worth of parts from RadioShack, allowing you to use it with an iGo or Kensington external batt. (Anyone ever make custom cables for their electric guitar back in high school?) 2) That said, if you don’t know what you’re doing, you could easily fry your 2500.00 baby. The MBP charger switches charging voltage once the battery has reached about 2/3 charge, down to 16v, and to be safe whatever home-brewed charging solution should be left at 16v, though the charging will be slower. I’ve repaired a few Powerbook G4 adapters in my time, so I might give this a whirl and will let you know the results if I do.
I’ve used both the Electrovaya’s and the Batterygeeks alot on location, and have never had a problem. If anyone has used the QuickerTek or MikeGyver solutions, please let us know how these worked for you. The Sanho units are not yet in stock, but I may very well be giving this a try if I don’t get around to my MagSafe mod.
