Downloading torrent files for software seems to be a very popular way of users acquiring new software for themselves, but it doesn’t always pay. Recent reports have found that Trojan Horses have been found in a few torrents for mac, so far. One in Apple IWork ‘09 and another in Abobe CS4 (the serial generator, not the actual installable image file).
Let this be a gentle reminder that pirated software, while sometimes necessary, is never as good as the real thing. Well sometimes it is, but it is generally frowned upon.

Hey TechHeads, you know the drill. 6pm at DBA, 1st Ave./2nd St. Lets get together and talk about the latest and not so greatest in techland, and what everyone’s doing to stay current with it all. Might have a few goodies and tidbits to share as well.
Hope to see you there.

Two new updates are available for download today at http://labs.adobe.com/.
Please keep in mind that these are release candidates. Auto update in LR will not work until they are officially released.

I’m categorizing this one as off topic as it doesn’t pertain to digital photography BUT, I think it deserves mention on our site. It’s kind of like Obama giving a nod to McCain – Digital won but Film deserves its props. Film is also about as old as McCain too, but I do think that McCain came first! But unlike our past presidential loser, film deserves more than just a notch in our history. It is still relevant and the death of Polaroid is a very sad thing that I am happy to report, might not be going away as it appears that a Dutch company may have plans to revive it. There is no telling which models they might revive, but at least there is hope, still, for film

Well it was pretty painless and took less than a half hour, thankfully. I am sure that you might see some bugs here and there due to older plugin compatibility. If you see something, please say something. Also you’ll noticed that the admin interface is different for posting new blogs and such so if you have any questions, please refer to the wordpress help section located here. And if that isn’t working feel free to email me directly.

Long time reader, first time writer. I had a client come back to me asking to fix moire in an image that was shot with tons of flare. I was just wondering if anybody has ever experienced checkered boxes on the raw file when shooting massive flare! These checkered boxes don’t look like flare to me, rather some weird pattern that only exists in the parts where there is flare! Has anybody experienced this?
FYI, we were shooting a P25+, outdoor daylight, tethered to a macbook pro on location. Thanks guys for the great posts, keep rocking it!
Editor’s Note: Brendan, thanks for the kudos and for posting as well. This is exactly the kind of thing we created this site for. -Eric Z.

Just wanted to put it out there that I’ve been hearing a bunch of unhappy reports on the latest crop of Seagate drives being sold through places like Newegg.com. Engadget, Electronista, and others have been reporting about drive failures ranging from the dreaded clicking noise to DOA drives that never worked. Now it’s looking like Seagate has acknowledged a firmware bug and is offering to recover lost data if the firmware fix doesn’t find it.
Needless to say, although HD storage is getter cheaper by the minute, one should still beware of the “killer deal” HD. I use enterprise, or server grade HD’s to make me sleep better at night, but really having a multi-tiered backup strategy across a variety of media would be the best course of action. I don’t know how many of you have read Peter Krogh’s DAM book, but it’s a good read when it comes to getting your storage and backup strategies in order.
More here at the Register .
Update: Now it’s floating around that the firmware update has been bricking drives that were operable!?!?! More Here
Hey all, been reading the blog for a while now, but this is my first post. I wanted to ask a question and get your opinions on monitor calibration software. Up until 6 months ago I was full time for a digital capture company and had used the software they had on hand to calibrate my monitors on jobs and never really thought that much about it as what we had worked, and I felt worked well.
Now that I am out on my and have been working with what others have I’m seeing some differences here and there so I wanted to see what you all were sticking by. While I was full time we were using ColorEyes Display Pro. It can be used with a bunch of different colorimeters and I found best result with the older Monaco DTP-94, which Integrated Color (the manufacturer of the software) stocked up on. It also worked well with the Eye One Display 2. I had used it with the Spyder 2 but never quite felt the results were as accurate, it always seemed slight off. Now of course monitor age could have had a bit to do with it, but I still think the other two colorimeters were better with this software than the Spyder.
Lately I have been working with people who own their own digital, so I use what they have. Most of these people all seem to have the Eye One Display 2 with it’s associated software. Now I never ran a heads up comparison between the two in order to see which was better, but in functions I felt ColorEyes did a better job. While the advanced mode of the Eye One software is good, I am not convinced it is as good. It also works the same for all monitors, including Eizos. The biggest drawback is prce, it is $325 for a 3 license pack and a DTP-94, or $299 for the same 3 license pack and a Spyder 3, which I have never even tried, though as I said, was never really a fan of the 2. Details details detail….
I own none of these currently. I am planning on building out a kit to rent and am looking to purchase one. I have never needed to own it before as I was always able to borrow from work, but no more.Purchase Fosamax

Power Support has announced Anti-Glare Film for the 15″ MacBookPros. Only $35. We are unsure how this film will effect color calibration, but its definitely worth testing to make location viewing more pleasurable.
