Apple releases 10.5.3 Leopard Update

Filed under: News, Opinion, Technical — Eric Zepeda @ 9:25 am

Ok, so there’s two schools of thought about updates: 1) Do them asap and get the pain out of the way, or 2) Wait until some other sucker finds out how they can’t connect the camera two minutes before the talent walks on the set.

Me, I’m a number two guy for the most part (stop the bad jokes now), but after buying a MBP that left me with no choice but to move to Leopard, I’ve been on the #1 wagon as of late.

Which is good and bad. There are many things about Leopard that I’ve come to appreciate, the cover flow/quick look thing is pretty handy in a pinch and the much maligned stacks are kind of cool I guess. But I did have my Canon connection go down with the 10.5.2 due to the Type8Camera app and though I recovered pretty quickly it still reminded me why I was always the “wait and see” curmudgeon when it came to new releases.

That said, since I had a few office days when 10.5.3 was released, I decided to update right away and do some testing to see if anything was amiss. So far so good, at least with the Phase P25 and C1 3.7.8. The Canon is out on a job, so I won’t be able to test until next week, and since I’m headed out to SFO, I fully expect some kind of system update shenanigan to bite me in the ass. I did check to see if 10.05.3 reinstalled the Type8Camera app, and it didn’t so that’s a plus, but until the Canon is up and running I’m not counting my range free chickens just yet.

I’ll test Leaf capture on Monday, but they’ve been really responsive with Leopard in general, so I don’t anticipate too many issues, if any at all.

If any of you have any news on this front, please pony up and save us all a bunch of heartache.

Hello from Argentina

Filed under: General, SFSC — Eric Isaac @ 11:29 pm

p1010565.jpgJust a quick note to say I am in Argentina. Day 5 and my compact printer goes down and that printer isn’t manufactured in the country, nor is it imported at this time. So I go out and buy a cheapy tonight only to find there are no profiles. So now I am up trying to figure a way to make it work. So far the best result is using the Epson R800 profile although its a bit light. Using Printer manages color, its a bit dark. I guess I just have to find a happy medium. Getting there. 12:30AM – 8AM call. On a better note, the locations are beautiful and rustic. Its like being in Paris here. Buenos Aires is very European. Luckily I can speak a tad bit of spanish. Enough to get my way around, order a meal and a bottle of wine and buy a printer. Now I just need to figure out how to get my Jacuzzi working. C’est la vie.

Thanks…

…to all of you that made it out to Barcade on Thursday. It was a blast, and good to see a good group of techs hanging out and talking shop.

Oh and btw, if you guys really thought I’d leave my DB unattended when I had to excuse myself, you were sorely mistaken. I almost snapped a pic of it in the graffiti covered loo.

Anyway, here’s to next month’s BBQ in the park. Eric I’s insisting on doing all the cooking, which puts me in charge of sophisticated adult refreshments.

Mojitos Anyone?

Capture One 4.1 released

Filed under: News — Eric Isaac @ 8:44 pm

This is not pro, but its better than not having tethered support at all. This release includes:

- Tethered shooting (excluding Live Preview) is now available for Phase One digital backs.
- The Hot Folder feature allows users to capture images with 3rd party applications and have supported RAW files appear automatically in Capture One
- Based on the new Lens+ and Focus+ technologies two lens correction features have been added. The new features address chromatic aberration, purple fringing and sharpness issues in images and will help take image quality to a new high level
- The new features are initially available for “Mamiya”-mounted Phase One digital backs and selected Phase One and Mamiya lenses

You can download it here

Feel free to report any bugs here for all of us!

K & M Camera becomes a NY Leaf Dealer

Filed under: News — Eric Isaac @ 10:20 pm

K & M Camera Logo

K & M Camera (385 Broadway), who has specialized in serving the Professional and Fine-Art Photographic Community for over 30 years, has just become an approved dealer of Leaf Camera systems, including the new Leaf Afi system. K & M Camera Tribeca has long been a rental house for both digital, film and lighting gear in NYC. They also sell a wide range of photographic equipment. Their website is currently under development.

What is going on with Phase?

Filed under: General, News — Eric Isaac @ 2:37 pm

Well from what I can deduce, there still is no Capture One 4 Pro…yet. I believe they still intend on releasing this version but there is no definitive date. However, Capture One 4 (non-pro) will release 4.1 which will allow you to shoot tethered with the Phase Backs. There has been no mention to me that this will support DSLR Cameras. So it seems like what they are doing now is releasing Capture One 4 DB.

The new system Phase 645 is still amiss.
#1 – The massive investments that people have put into Hasselblad H-series systems are most likely going to impede Phase One’s ability to gain control over the format.
#2 – Auto-focus is slow
#3 – Only Syncs to 125
#4 – Many would say it pales in comparison to the Leaf AFI.
