So a photog that I tech for gave me his laptop and asked me why he wasn’t able to play DVD’s on his 2008 17″ MBP.
“Hm?” I replied
(Apparently the person who set up the machine left out unessential things like idvd to trim down the OS. )
Then after light temple scratching and medium to heavy google searching I realized that. No you can’t fix it without re-installing the OS and having to reformat and have to re-instal all your programs.
Then after less temple scratching and medium to heavy google searching this was discovered. So I thought i’d share it:
Just an interesting bit of info:
Since DVD player was trashed on the laptop we thought it was necessary to reinstall the entire system, However, I found a program which you might be interest in calledPacifist
It allows you to download the program, and run it in conjunction with your system install discs.
It then will individually pull all the elements of that install disc and you can pick what you want from it and extract single components and then install that single component. In this case it showed a all the contents of the 2 discs and one of those components was the program DVD player, you click that one program, click install it prompts you to reinsert the disc and that single program is installed. Cool program, shareware. DVD player is back and working….neat solution.

I’m categorizing this one as off topic as it doesn’t pertain to digital photography BUT, I think it deserves mention on our site. It’s kind of like Obama giving a nod to McCain – Digital won but Film deserves its props. Film is also about as old as McCain too, but I do think that McCain came first! But unlike our past presidential loser, film deserves more than just a notch in our history. It is still relevant and the death of Polaroid is a very sad thing that I am happy to report, might not be going away as it appears that a Dutch company may have plans to revive it. There is no telling which models they might revive, but at least there is hope, still, for film

I am looking for a new tech who is looking for a little more onset hands on training. Someone who has taken a phase one class and has some retouching experience. I have a job coming up that I am going to need an assistant on but it has no budget for a second so this would be for learning experience only. I promise lots of on-computer time to get some practice being on the computer. I also want to sit down with the right person for a few hours this week to go over some stuff. Email me at ebisaac@realworldworkflow.com if you are interested.
Thanks,
Eric
Well, in the last month i’ve been to: Tokyo, Hong Kong, Bali, and Langkawi working. After shooting some amazing photos (my opinion) in Bali I’ve renewed confidence in shooting and have decided to take a week for my own shooting in Bangkok. So that is where I am now. After this I am going to Kuala Lumpur for a few days before flying back to NYC. I am exhausted, have slept 3 hours in two days and I am sitting here figuring out my schedule for the week. Already got ripped off by a private car service to the hotel, overpaying by 3 times the amount of what a taxi would have cost me. You live you learn.
To keep this on topic, I am going to IT CITY in Pantip Plaza to haggle for a new card reader that I lost to the stylist assistant who needed to download her SD card yesterday/late last night/early this morning.
So far this trip throughout Asia I have:
- Been attacked by 3 monkeys at once over a bunch of bananas (no scratches or bites luckily).
- Seen a cockfight.
- Fallen in a rice patty
- Watched a dozen or so teenagers jump into the water I drank.
- Had the best Roast Pork in the world.
- Gotten my shoes cleaned and disinfected by customs (they didn’t find it humorous when I asked them if they could do my laundry too).
- Seen a Viper up close!
- Seen a Monitor lizard
- Offended a Buddist by asking her how much I would have to pay her family to marry her (hey, she was telling me how it works I was just curious how much it would set me back…hypothetically)
- Seen why single men flock to Thailand.
- Learned how to say “Can I take your picture” in Indonesian, Balinese, Malay and Thai. Along with “Thank you” and “How much”
Hey everyone, have a happy fourth. I will be leaving tonight for Paris. I’ll be posting when I can from both Paris and Greece. Au revoir and adio!
So on July 4th I leave for Paris for 6 days on vacation. Then I hop on a plane to Greece for a 7 day job. I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations on where to stay (area, hotels, etc.) while in Paris.
