I had a two day shoot last week, setup on a quad-core tower, using Capture One 5.0.2 and a Nikon D3x. I have to say that Nikon has really stepped up their game with the last few cameras they came out with. Some of the controls are less convoluted than with the Canon. Its a surprise that this is only the first shoot I’ve ever had with this camera. Much like the Canon line of lenses, the nikons best glass are in the prime lenses. The auto-focus is also least to be desired.
My main issue was with the software, lots of bugs and I’ve made a list:
- Capture numbering continuos, will not reset to one on new shot.
- Capture format keeps reverting back to “Name and 4 digit counter”
- Cannot use underscore in name box, only dash (you can in version 5.0)
- Camera connection locks up intermittently.
- Images very slow to render
- Image selection will not keep up unless you set to Auto Select New Capture to Immediately (then you wait for render)
- Most setting sliders are slow to react, especially when captures are coming in.
- Lots of crashing while trying to process, especially if you add images to the queue too quickly
Some pet peeves with this release that really bother me are:
- the whole set as compare variant thing gets really annoying. You have to be in your “multi-view” for it to work.
- The speed of capturing is really slow, but to give credit where credit is due, I have not tested this with a digital back.
- Still really missing a loupe tool, guys !!!!
- When I add folder as a capture folder, it should automatically be added as a favorite, no?
I’d be curious to know if others have been having these problems or similar and if so, which systems are you using this with?
So I ran into a bit of a challenge on the last job syncing LR tags/adjustments. In the spirit of constant improvement, I figured I’d post it to the forum and see what tips I can glean for the future. (AKA: “There has to be a better way.”) Here’s the basic rundown:
Shoot to Laptop “A”. Backup to external. Photog takes external to edit at night on Laptop “B” (his). I told him to just double-click the .lrcat file on the external – so that all adjustments were logged on the external’s LR catalog. Instead he opened LR and imported the images. So all his edits were in his catalog. (He didn’t want to carry Laptop A with him – just to explain why we didn’t use the obvious/easiest solution!)
The best I could do: I went back to Laptop B, opened his catalog and saved the metadata to xmp sidecars on the external. Then I hooked it up to Laptop A, dragged the XMP’s over manually (shot folder by shot folder), and re-imported the shot folders into Laptop A’s correct LR catalog. But this seemed rather inefficient: having to go into the Finder, select XMP files folder-by-folder, overwrite the old XMP’s on Laptop A, then open the correct catalog and RE-import those folders. For all the little “tricks” in LR, it seems it should be easier. I did notice that just “Synchronize Folder” did NOT pick-up the tags, despite the new XMP’s; I had to remove the folder and re-import.
I figure there’s a good chance someone who’s more savvy with LR (I use it on less than 5% of my jobs) has a better way to solve this situation.
A second, related challenge: Suggestions on how best to sync LR tags/adjustments (meta) over the internet? The same shooter wanted to edit the last day and send me the tags (so we didn’t have to meet up). Since he’d all-but-certainly use his own catalog again, his .lrdata file wouldn’t help me (even if I did have him FTP the entire thing). And I couldn’t count on him being computer-savvy enough to reliably save his meta, copy the XMP’s to a folder to ZIP and send. Even if he could, it just seems wildly too much work. So: over the internet, potentially with 2 different catalogs…best way to sync metadata?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

hey all,
which of your opinion is the best laptop tripod mount availible at this point? Not enclosed, like the seal like cases, just straight to the laptop. thx
I can’t figure out why my layout image, when doing an overlay in CaptureOne 4.8, is always in landscape (horizontal) format, even though the image is vertical?
Any thoughts and how to correct it?
Thanks,
Paul
Hey Guys,
I’m getting an Eizo soon. I’m thinking about getting the Eizo CG222WBK instead of one of the higher of the coloredge series, like the Eizo CE240 ColorEdge
What do you guys think ?
Anyone have any tips/thoughts on the sloooooowwwwwwwwwww CF card workflow in v4.8? I figure it’s more geared towards casual shooters who want to edit card contents before downloading…but I find the generation of thumbs is making card download take FOREVER; you can’t even “download all” until the thumbs have all generated.
As a workaround, I’ve been ‘canceling’ and doing a direct OS drag-drop, then quickly ‘pasting’ settings onto the images and renaming later. But obviously this isn’t as convenient as a ‘proper’ workflow within C1. Anyone found any way to turn-off thumbs or another method to speed it up?

Has anyone ever had an issue with using a US-purchased external HD with a power supply in a country with different voltage? Particularly in England? I’ve got a London-based client who’s shopping for a 1 TB drive, but is concerned about the power issues. Offhand, I’d think there wouldn’t be a problem with just using an adapter, but with data, you can never be too sure.
Hey all – I was curious if people are finding v4.8 to be substantially more stable than 4.7/4.6/etc.? I’ve been doing some off-set testing with a P25/H2 and 5D “classic” – and it seems to be crashing less. I’m particularly interested if anyone’s been putting 4.8 through the paces with a MKIII 1ds or 5D MKII – as 3.7.9 isn’t a tethering option with those cameras. But I’m curious about all camera/DB experiences. Let the harping begin!

Hey you guys,
What photo cataloging software do you guys like? I’m thinking about getting Portfolio Extensis. I need something for a database of 300 gigs+ and powerful search tools.
thanks!

We’ve all been there. The shooter sets up fires off a frame, it comes in and you roll over to the focus window to check sharpness, and it ain’t even close. Back and forth you go checking again and again until something works, or you reconcile yourself to the fact that the lens is a dog, or diffraction is a factor, or yada, yada. We all know that precise sharpness in MFDB land is quite frankly, a bitch to obtain and hold, and finally someone of note has offered up more than the usual after shoot barroom theory.
So with that said: Techs, put on your reading glasses. These two articles for your digestion are from Joseph Holmes, a noted landscape photographer and color scientist(at least in my book, check out his site for his working spaces and other tech stuff). Let me say that they are long, detailed and comprehensive, but stick with it as there are many things to glean from such an effort and I applaud Mr. Holmes for the effort and sharing of this information.
Also of note is that Irident Digital’s Excellent Raw Developer is mentioned as one of his favorite Raw Converters. While I think C1 4.7 is producing some very sweet files, it’s always good to have another recipe for file conversion and many people swear by RD.
